The Circumcision and Naming of Jesus. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, 37and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety. Sulpicius Quirinius became legate of the province of Syria in A. At that time, a provincial census of Judea was taken up. If Quirinius had been legate of Syria previously, it would have to have been before 10 B. A previous legateship after 4 B.
We ask you, humbly, to help us.
Raising kids in this commercialized world is tough. But sometimes with all the hustle and bustle, it can be hard to keep the focus on the birth of the Savior and the blessings that Christ brings to our lives. There are presents to buy and wrap, Christmas cards to make and send, lights to hang, and goodies to make. This time of year I try to remember our first Christmas together after we got married.

The only item here that allows any guess at the date the first statue was erected is the fact that it mentions that this was the first man to set up a statue by public decree in other words, the city legislature voted to pay for it. Since this presumably would not be long after the city was founded no more than five or ten years , if we can figure out when Pisidian Antioch was established, we will have some idea of when it was set up, though nothing like an exact date.
This is not the most famous Antioch in Syria , founded in B. Only after this date would “decemvirs” be issuing public decrees, since these were the officials comprising the city council under a Roman colonial charter. When all things are considered, we can speculate Quirinius’ duumvirate was held between 6 and 1 B. But even with other dates, the inscription offers no proof of a second governorship of Syria.
First, there is no particular connection between being governor and being the Duumvir of a city. The one does not entail or even imply the other.
Clothed With the Sun, Moon Under Her Feet
Family, friends, and neighbors are welcomed into our homes with loving arms as we anticipate the birth of Christ. He is the reason for the season, and we need to be sure to celebrate his birth appropriately. Unfortunately, many of us Christians are only concerned with the material side of Christmas. We get caught up in the hustle and bustle of sales and deadlines and so forget why this month is so important. Ways to Celebrate As children, we eagerly await Christmas morn, with all its glamour and glitter beneath the tree.
The tearing open of presents along with squeals of delight from the children warms my heart.
The nativity of Jesus or birth of Jesus is described in the gospels of Luke and two accounts agree that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the time of Herod the Great, that his mother Mary was married to Joseph, who was of Davidic descent and was not his biological father, and that his birth was effected by divine intervention, but the two gospels agree on little else.

Chronology of Jesus
Setting aside of the Passover lamb Year when Jesus Was Born Since the Gospels clearly affirm that Jesus was born when Herod the Great was still alive Matthew 2 , the dominant view in days past was that Jesus was born no later than 4 BC, generally viewed as the year terminating Herod’s reign. But in recent years, several scholars—including W. Martin, Ormond Edwards, and in the latest but not the previous edition of his Handbook of Biblical Chronology Jack Finegan—have argued that the date usually assigned to Herod’s death is much too early.
Based on a new look at several lines of evidence, they maintain that he died in early 1 BC. Then 5 BC emerges as by far the most credible date of Jesus’ birth. Lunar eclipse before Herod’s death Josephus places Herod’s death between a lunar eclipse and the Feast of Passover.
The Date of the Nativity in Luke (6th ed., ) Richard Carrier. It is beyond reasonable dispute that Luke dates the birth of Jesus to 6 A.D. It is equally indisputable that Matthew dates the birth of Jesus to 6 B.C. (or some year before 4 B.C.).
Mary Harwell Sayler Question: Are the Twelve Tribes of Israel the same as the twelve sons of Jacob? If so, why is Joseph not always mentioned? Did Jesus come from his tribe? If not, which one and why was it chosen? According to the first book of the Bible, the twelve sons of Jacob became the tribal chiefs of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, each of which bears the name of its founding father.
You’ll find lively stories about those sons and their families throughout much of Genesis, but for a summarization, turn to Chapter There, Jacob whom God renamed “Israel” gave his sons a final blessing and a prophetic word about the direction of their lives, at least partly based on their character traits and previous choices. The Bible continues to mention them occasionally instead of or in addition to their father.
To be clear though, this first Joseph lived many centuries before Jesus’ birth, so he is, of course, not the man to whom the Virgin Mary was espoused. In the book of beginnings, various stories indicate that Jacob blatantly favored his son Joseph, as Jews and Christians are still apt to do today. Initially, this favoritism occurred because of Jacob’s love for his second wife, the beautiful Rachel, who became the mother of Joseph and his younger brother Benjamin.
Unhindered by such physical duties as tending the flocks and fighting off predators, this pampered son not only dressed like a young prince, he tattled on his brothers, who were already jealous of him.
Dating the Birth of Christ
Talmage maintained that Jesus Christ was born on April 6 in the year 1 bc. Talmage was apparently the first LDS writer to propose this particular date. Nearly a century has passed since his book appeared, and in that time it has become practically axiomatic among Latter-day Saints that Jesus was born on April 6. In the last century, much new information has come to light about the New Testament. New data from archaeological and historical sources, combined with a careful reexamination of the scriptural accounts involved, suggest that the April 6 dating is no longer tenable.
Mithra, the Light of the World, is an ancient sun god identified with Sol Invictus, who was born on December 25th. Mithra resembled Jesus Christ in many ways, including having a virgin birth, 12 companions and an ascension into heaven, as well as other doctrinal and ritual correspondences such as baptism and the eucharist.
I have long heard that our modern date for Christmas, Dec. Needless to say, I was surprised to learn the true history of how this date was selected. When was Jesus Really Born? Though it may sound strange to our modern minds, it is likely that early Christians did not place any particular value on birthdays. This makes it hard to conclude when Jesus was really born. As we know, with time, the Western date prevailed and helped to determine the Sunday on which to celebrate Easter.
It is a belief that the life of a Jewish prophet began and ended on the same day.
What Year was Jesus Born? Some people have calculated that there were years from creation to the birth of Jesus. This would mean that A. Using the 7 day week as a template, and a day equaling a thousand years to God 2 Peter 3: This tends to focus great significance to the start of the 3rd millennium after the birth of Christ. A question then arises.
The holidays are upon us and today we are sharing Ways to Have a CHRIST-Centered Christmas. Because HE is the reason for the season and His presence is more important than the presents.
Talmage was apparently the first LDS writer to propose this particular date. Nearly a century has passed since his book appeared, and in that time it has become practically axiomatic among Latter-day Saints that Jesus was born on April 6 in that year. Two other Apostles, President J. Reuben Clark and Elder Bruce R. In this article, Jeffrey R. Chadwick, Jerusalem Center Professor of Archaeology and Near Eastern Studies, draws upon many sources—scriptural, historical, archeological, and astronomical—to shed light on the probable date of the Savior’s birth.
Using the known date of Herod the Great’s death, information from the Book of Mormon about the length of Jesus’s life, technical details about the Jewish lunar-solar calendar, the timing of the Annunciation to Mary, and other historical data, Chadwick narrows the window of time in which the Savior would have been born to December of 5 BC. The author is careful to deal with statements made by latter-day prophets supporting the April 6, 1 BC, date first proposed by Elder Talmage.
Chadwick is able to show that these statements always occur in talks given about other topics not expressly about the date of Christ’s birth and probably rely on Elder Talmage’s assumptions. But a careful look at Doctrine and Covenants
